AI limitations

Hayley uses a large language model (Claude, developed by Anthropic) to analyse uploaded documents. AI language models have known limitations that affect the reliability of their outputs:

• They can produce plausible-sounding but incorrect findings ("hallucinations"). Every finding should be verified against the source document before acting on it.
• They may miss issues that a careful human reader would catch, particularly issues in headers, footers, text boxes, embedded images, and content driven by Word field codes.
• Their analysis of nuanced legal concepts — such as the Makita/Dasreef admissibility framework — reflects patterns in their training data and may not capture recent developments in the law.
• Flesch–Kincaid readability scores produced by Hayley are estimates based on AI analysis, not computed scores. They should be treated as approximate indicators, not precise measurements.

Best-effort tool

Hayley is designed to assist experienced professionals who are capable of evaluating its outputs critically. It is not designed to replace professional judgment or peer review, and it should not be used as if it were.

The workflow we recommend — using Hayley to catch mechanical and technical issues before human peer review — reflects this design intent. The tool handles the tedious and easily-missed checks so that human reviewers can focus on argument, reasoning, and narrative quality. Neither the tool nor the human reviewer alone is sufficient; both are part of a sound review process.

Hayley can also serve a useful role as a final check after substantive revisions have been made following a human peer review. Where an expert has revised a report in response to a reviewer's comments, resubmitting the revised report to Hayley provides a mechanical check that the revisions have not inadvertently introduced new errors — spelling inconsistencies, citation formatting issues, or readability problems — that might not be the focus of a human reviewer's attention. Used in this way, Hayley complements rather than duplicates the human review process.

No modification of documents

Hayley does not modify, annotate, or produce alternative versions of uploaded documents. All feedback is delivered in the member dashboard and by email. Your source document is never altered.
